Khargone violence: Youth Attacks on Cop

A senior police official who was injured in the Khargone violence in Madhya Pradesh on Ram Navami said that he was shot at when he tried to stop a sword-wielding youth.

Khargone SP Siddhartha Chowdhury, who was injured in the communal violence that occurred on Ram Navami, said he was shot at when he tried to snatch a sword from one of the rioters

“I rushed to the spot when I heard that a communal clash had occurred. I saw a youth with a sword and ran after him. As I tried to snatch it from him, my thumb was injured,” he said. “As I tried to catch him again, his friend fired at me, injuring my leg,” Chowdhury said.

Although Chowdhury did not need surgery, he was advised to take complete rest.

WHAT HAPPENED IN KHARGONE?

On April 10, stones were allegedly pelted at a Ram Navami procession, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells to control the situation, Khargone Additional Collector Sumer Singh Mujalde said.

The pelting of stones triggered arson and several vehicles and houses were set ablaze, a senior police officer said. Three police personnel were among those injured in the clash.

Following the incident, a curfew was clamped in the region. The citizens were asked not to step out except in the case of medical emergencies. So far, 100 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

The state government demolished the houses of the accused involved in the violence to recover the damage caused to properties.

MUSLIMS TARGETED OVER KHARGONE VIOLENCE: CLERICS

A delegation of Islamic clerics in Bhopal met the DGP and said that participants of Ram Navami processions in Sendhwa and Khargone hoisted saffron flags on mosques and raised objectionable slogans, which led to violence. They said despite this, Muslims were being targeted and blamed for the clashes
