This is the third madrassa in the state to be demolished by the government this month after police discovered that these educational institutions were being used as hubs for terrorist activities.

The madrassa — Markazul Ma’arif Qariana Madrassa — a two-storey building was located at Kabaitari.

The district administration is demolishing the structure with up to eight bulldozers.

Earlier on Friday, police arrested Mufti Hafizur Rahman, one of the madrassa’s teachers, on suspicion of being a member of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

On Tuesday, police and Mufti raided the madrassa and discovered several objectionable items and literature. Mufti Hafizur Rahman began teaching at the madrasa in 2018.

The district disaster management authorities ordered the demolition of the madrassa on Tuesday, claiming that it lacked the necessary and essential documents to carry out multipurpose activities in a single campus with multiple buildings and an unspecified number of people, and that it lacked adequate provisions to mitigate any type of potential disaster, while the structures appeared to be in a hazardous condition.

The district authorities evacuated about 200 students from the madrassa on Tuesday.
