Hyderabad: A 20-year-old woman committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in Chaderghat on Sunday night. Harassment by her husband and in-laws allegedly drove her to take the extreme step, police said.

The deceased, Afreen Begum, a resident of Old Malakpet, was married to one Mohd Amair of Tallabkatta nine months ago. However, due to some issues between the couple, she returned to her parents at Chaderghat four months ago.

On Sunday night, she got a phone call from Amair after which she was depressed. Later in the night, she allegedly consumed some poison and fell unconscious in the house. Family members rushed her to Osmania General Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead, the Chaderghat police said.

Afreen’s parents told the police that Amair and his relatives were harassing her, demanding additional dowry, though they were given Rs 2 lakh, gold ornaments and other household articles. The Chaderghat police have booked a case and are investigating.
