The fish medicine, offered by the Goud family of Hyderabad for the last 156 years as a cure for asthma and other breathing disorders, is kept in the mouth of a live Murrel fish and slipped into the mouth of patients.

An asthma patient is administered a traditional fish medicine. Every year thousands of asthma patients arrive here to receive this fish therapy from the Bathini Goud family, a secret formula of herbs, handed down by generations only to family members.

The herbs are inserted in the mouth of a live sardine, or murrel fish, and slipped into the patient’s throat.

The treatment, which is based on a secret herb formula, draws thousands of people from all over the country.

The medicine is administered on the auspicious day of ‘Mrigasira Karti’ which falls in June with the onset of the annual monsoon.

The medicine, which has been offered by the family of the southern Indian city to patients for the last 161 years as a cure for asthma and other breathing disorders, is placed in the mouth of a live murrel fish and then slipped into the mouth of the patient.
