Hyderabad, April 12: Kharge seeks all party meet on Womens Reservation Bill in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s letter. He criticised the government for hurrying the implementation.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the move aims for political mileage. He added that the step does not prioritise genuine women empowerment.
The Centre has convened a special Parliament session from April 16. Moreover, the government seeks support to pass amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
Kharge seeks all party meet on Womens Reservation Bill to discuss delimitation and related changes. Therefore, he urged the Centre to hold discussions after April 29.
He said the Bill was passed unanimously in 2023. However, he noted that immediate implementation did not follow despite earlier consensus.
He also alleged that the government did not consult opposition parties before calling the session. Meanwhile, he said meaningful discussion needs clarity on delimitation.
Kharge stated that opposition parties had requested an all party meeting earlier. However, he claimed the government did not respond to those demands.
He further said the timing of the session during state elections raises concerns. According to him, this reinforces the view that the move seeks political gains.
The government requires opposition support for a two thirds majority. Therefore, consensus remains crucial for passing the constitutional amendment.
