Hyderabad: A leopard that was caught by Forest officials in Marriguda mandal of Nalgonda district on Thursday died while being shifted to the Nehru Zoological Park here.

“A team of doctors has certified that the cause of death is due to internal haemorrhage, shock and asphyxia. All samples are collected and sent to the VBRI Shantinagar for detailed investigation,” a press release from the Nehru Zoological Park said.

Earlier in the day, following information of a leopard caught in a snare set up by farmers to trap wild boars at Rajapeta Thanda village of Marriaguda mandal in Nalgonda district in Telangana, the Forest Divisional Officer, Nalgonda reached the spot and sought help from the officials of the Nehru Zoological Park.

A team of the veterinary experts from the zoo rushed to the spot and rescued the leopard safely by way of chemical immobilization. The animal however escaped and attacked two persons although it was tranquilized but was later caught by the forest officials.

It was put in a cage and was being shifted to the zoo where it was to be kept in quarantine before being released back in the wild. However, the animal died on the way to the city. At the Zoo Park, a team of veterinary experts conducted the post-mortem examination, officials said.
