The fire broke out in one of the coaches and soon engulfed three train coaches bound for Darbhanga in Bihar. Visuals from the spot showed the coaches of the train going up in flames. The extent of the fire was so great that the flames could be seen from several meters away. The incident comes at a time when trains going to UP and Bihar are witnessing an unprecedented rush of passengers due to Chhath Puja.

The Darbhanga Superfast Express was also reportedly overcrowded with passengers. At around 5.30 pm, the station master of the Sarai Bhopal railway station noticed smoke billowing from the S-1 sleeper after which he alerted the officials. The train was stopped and passengers were deboarded as the fire spread to the adjoining coaches.

Three train coaches were gutted in the fire, which was brought under control in 10 minutes with the help of fire tenders. The affected coaches have been detached from the train.

A short circuit led to the fire

Speaking to media persons from the spot, SSP Sanjay Kumar Verma said the fire reportedly broke out due to a short circuit. Some people sustained minor injuries, but there were no casualties, now efforts are on to resume the train’s journey.
