A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y Chandrachud, Justices JP Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra heard the petition on tuesday.

Pursuant to the Supreme court’s previous orders, the court allowed cleaning of the Wazu Khana under the sup-ervision of the District Superintendent of Varanasi.

The Gyanvapi Masjid Management Committee informed the Supreme court during the hearing that they have sealed the water tank for about two years as per the orders of the Supreme court and they are also willing to clean the tank.

Advocate Vishnu shankar jain filed the petition on behalf of Hindu women devotees.  In the petition, jain stated that the Shiv Linga is sacred to Hindus and that it should be kept away from dirt, dust, dead animals etc and the fish in the water tank were dead and there was a bad smell coming from it.  Anjuman Intejamia Masjid Management Committee is responsible for this situation and death of fishes. He said that this situation would not have happened if the fish had been removed as per the request of Varanasi District Magistrate.

Meanwhile, in May 2022, after a Shivlingam was found in the mosque complex, the Waju Khana area was sealed on the orders of the Supreme Court.  While the Hindu community says that what was seen in the mosque is a Shivalinga, the Muslim community claims that it is a fountain.  (Hydnow)
