Hyderabad, April 12: Womens Reservation Act implementation gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Parliament leaders to act swiftly. He said the time has come to enforce the law in its true spirit.
He wrote to Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha floor leaders before a special session. Moreover, he asked all members to unite and pass key amendments. These changes aim to enable early implementation.
Womens Reservation Act implementation is targeted before the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Therefore, the government plans to ensure reservation is in place for these polls.
The special three day Parliament session will be held from April 16 to 18. During this period, lawmakers will discuss and pass the required amendments.
The law, also known as Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was passed in 2023. It provides 33 percent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
However, the current law links implementation to delimitation after the 2027 Census. As a result, the quota could have been delayed until 2034.
Now, the government seeks to amend the law. This step will help enforce the quota earlier. It will also increase Lok Sabha seats to 816, with 273 reserved for women.
