Anodal officer of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, who had been dealing with distribution of food to those in need after the lockdown was first announced in March, tested positive for the coronavirus.

The nodal officer was posted at a Deen Dayal Rasoi in Shahjahanabad area of Bhopal which fed more than 1,000 people every day. Food packets for the poor and those in need were also prepared in this kitchen, officials said.

The Bhopal civic body official also used to go to the corporation’s office at Mata Mandir area daily to procure ration for the kitchen. Follow Live Updates on coronavirus pandemic

The officer reportedly did not show symptoms, but got himself tested on April 16.

While the kitchen has been shut, a shelter home close to the Deen Dayal Kitchen is also being sanitised, additional director of the corporation said.

A senior Bhopal MC official said contact history of the infected officer was also being done but since he was involved in distribution and preparation of food, it was taking more than usual.

Samples of 20 municipal employees, who were in regular touch with the official, have already been collected for testing. “All those who were in touch with this official have been asked to go in self quarantine immediately,” a district administration official said.

Around 100 health department officials and workers in Bhopal have already tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Of the total 1,407 Covid-19 cases in Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal has reported over 210.
