Hyderabad, April 10 (Maxim News): Scientists at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) in Hyderabad have developed a new self-charging device that continuously generates electricity from the tires of moving vehicles. If it comes to the market, it is said that sensors and small devices in smart vehicles will not need batteries.
The details of this research, carried out by a research team led by Dr. Ujjwal Pal, have been recently published in the journal ‘Advanced Functional materials.’
The TriboElectric NanoGenerator (TENG) Power Wheel has been designed to harvest the mechanical energy emitted from tires and convert it into electricity. The device converts the vibrations generated when the tire rotates into electrical energy. However, this is a technology that has been around for decades. IICT scientists have made three key changes to it.
This device uses special composite materials to harvest electricity from tires. Usually, such devices use plastic or metal layers. IICT scientists have used a special material called Metal Organic Framework (MOF). They have deliberately created some defects in its structure. With these defects, the movement of electrons occurs faster and more electricity is generated with minimal stress.
The device incorporates cutting-edge 3D p[rinting technology, which scientists say will allow for mass production at a low cost.
This is not just a device, but a complete system designed as a Smart Power Wheel. It converts the movement of the tires as well as the heat generated when the tires roll on the road into electricity, thereby improving performance.
Uses
-Tire pressure sensors do not require a separate battery, but are powered by the movement of the tire. 3D technology allows them to be made and installed in any desired shape to fit perfectly inside the tire.
– It provides continuous power to brake sensors and accelerometers.
– Small electronic devices avoid the need to change batteries frequently, thereby reducing battery waste. (Maxim News)
